Despite Economic, Environmental Challenges, Russia's 2015 Vegetable Yield Sees 12% On-Year Increase Featured

The end-year yield of various types of vegetables harvested in 2015, according to Russia's Ministry of Agriculture (Minselkhoz), was 16.1 million tonnes, 12.3 percent higher than the yield results of 2014 when the total yield amounted to 15.5 million tonnes.
Minselkhoz emphasised that despite economic difficulties, fires and drought in some regions of Russia, there was increased production overall.  As of December 24, the gross harvest of greenhouse vegetables in Russia amounted to 470 900 tonnes, of which 337 thousand tonnes were cucumbers, 123.4 thousand tonnes - tomatoes, and another 10. 5 thousand tonnes of other greenhouse crops. Russian potato growers in 2015 collected 33.6 million tonnes, which is 15.9 percent more than the average results of the last five years. For example, in 2014, farmers harvested 31.5 million tonnes of potatoes. For the entire season, Russian farmers gathered 2.9 million tonnes of fruits and berries, which is 9 percent more than the average of the past 5 years, but slightly below the record result of 2014 when they amounted to 3 million tonnes.
